How does a water softener actually work?

A salt-based softener uses ion-exchange resin: hard minerals (calcium and magnesium) swap places with sodium ions on the resin as water flows through. Periodically the system regenerates by rinsing the resin with a brine solution and flushing the hardness minerals down the drain.

A properly-sized metered softener uses roughly one 40-lb bag per person per 1-2 months on typical Central Valley water. Timer-based softeners waste far more; every system we install is metered.

Does softened water taste salty?

No. The amount of sodium added to softened water is trivial — about the same as a slice of white bread per glass. If you want salt-free drinking water, add an under-sink RO system or choose our salt-free bundle.

'Salt-free softening' is technically a misnomer — TAC (Template Assisted Crystallization) media doesn't remove hardness, it transforms the minerals so they can't stick to pipes and fixtures. Scale is prevented, but the water isn't 'soft' in the traditional sense. You still get anti-scale benefits without the salt, drain, or electricity.
