Salt vs salt-free softeners: which is right for you?
An honest comparison of salt-based and salt-free water conditioners — how they work, what they do (and don't) do, and how to pick.
Both technologies solve real problems — but they don't do the same thing. Anyone selling you a 'salt-free softener' as identical to a traditional softener is stretching the truth.
Salt-based softeners: the classic
Ion-exchange resin swaps calcium and magnesium ions for sodium. The result is genuinely soft water — the kind that makes soap lather instantly, leaves dishes spot-free, and feels silky in the shower.
Trade-offs: you need to add salt (roughly one bag/person/month), the system regenerates and sends brine down the drain, and it needs a power outlet nearby.
Salt-free conditioners: the modern alternative
Template Assisted Crystallization (TAC) media transforms hardness minerals into microscopic crystals that flow harmlessly through your plumbing instead of clinging to it. Scale is prevented — pipes, water heater, and appliances stay clean.
Trade-offs: the water isn't chemically 'soft' the way ion-exchange water is. You won't get the same shampoo lather or dish sparkle. But you also don't haul salt, don't waste water regenerating, and don't need a drain line or an outlet.
So which one?
